CST, which has decades of security experience working to protect the Jewish community, is pleased to support the work of Faith Associates to improve security for mosques and other places of worship. Faith Associates is a charity set up to provide research, training, advice and guidance to influence the challenges faced by minority communities. Their new initiative, Mosque Security, has launched to assist mosques with security in the month before Ramadan.

Last week, CST hosted a successful security training course for commercial security guarding company managers, directors and senior staff. CST recognises the importance of ongoing training and learning for security staff who help to protect our Jewish community.

This week, CST hosted over 30 CCTV contractors from across the United Kingdom at the second CCTV forum that CST has held. Through the Security Enhancement Project, CST has spent over £11 million on enhancing physical security measures at Jewish buildings throughout the UK, including CCTV. CST has also developed a national security control room, with direct CCTV access to hundreds of Jewish communal building across the UK.

Last week CST is delighted to have hosted the first CST Stamford Hill Schools meeting. CST invited schools in the area who receive funds through the Government Grant. This meeting was part of CST’s strengthening engagement with the kehilla, especially regarding security for schools.

CST's National Head of Training ran a specially designed day for ten Hatzola members from the Kehilla, at CST's Hendon office on Sunday 12 November. Hatzola is a Jewish volunteer-led ambulance team which responds to medical emergencies and incidents within the community.

CST has hosted a number of pre-High Holy Day briefings in recent weeks in order to prepare Police, security volunteers, security officers and commercial guards for the large security operation that will take place during the High Holy Day period. Briefings took place across the country, including in Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, Sussex, Birmingham and London.

Following several high profile cyber attacks that have affected businesses, charities, and government services alike, CST facilitated a one-day cyber security conference for the Chief Executives of the UK Jewish community in London. Over 40 people attended the event that took place at JW3 in North London. The aim of the conference was to provide the professional leadership of Jewish community organisations with a greater understanding of the threat and risks of cyber attacks and crucially what sort of policies and practices these organisations should be adopting to best protect themselves.

Annually, just before the High Holy Days, CST hosts a briefing for commercial guarding companies and relevant staff. CST administers an annual Government grant for guarding at state funded Jewish schools, and since the funds began, CST has been engaging regularly with several commercial guarding companies to the ensure the Jewish community is protected.

On the morning of Saturday 15 July, CST volunteers and commercial security guards helped protect the Jewish community from a potentially serious incident. Shortly after 11.15am, a man was seen running in Brent Street, Hendon, north west London. The man was barefoot and bare chested, carrying two knives (one a large kitchen style knife, the other smaller). He rushed down a narrow lane in which a synagogue is located, and which is a dead end. Ahead of him, synagogue congregants ran into the building, ushered by the synagogue’s own CST-trained security officer and a commercial security guard employed by the synagogue.

Following the tragic Manchester and London attacks, which left 30 people dead, two hundred CST security volunteers participated in vigorous, specially designed security training scenarios. CST’s staff and volunteers are fully committed to the task at hand, confronting the threats facing both the Jewish community and our wider British society.

CST was privileged to assist the Belz community in Stamford Hill with the first visit by Rabbi Yissachar Dov Rokeach to the UK in 23 years. The Belz community approached CST just under two months before the trip, seeking assistance. There were numerous highly detailed planning meetings which led to Belz, CST and two commercial security companies working together in close partnership before and throughout the visit.

The raising of the national threat level to “Critical” means that Government, Police and security services believe “an attack is expected imminently”. This threat level is highly unusual and will result in both significantly increased policing and the deployment of military personnel. There does not, at present, seem to be precise intelligence about where or when a further attack (or attacks) may occur, but crowded places appear to be at highest risk.

The Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights this week launched a new publication to help governments address security needs of Jewish communities across Europe. CST’s Mike Whine MBE attended the launch at the German Parliamentary Society this week. CST is proud to have helped with the compilation of the report, which aims to help governments understand the challenges faced by Jewish communities and to help develop effective responses.

Last week CST’s Deputy Head of Krav Maga visited Leeds and Manchester to train CST security volunteers from the region. Several sessions took place as part of the re-launch of the Leeds training calendar. The goal of the training was to explain the mindset behind Krav Maga at CST and inspire people to come to training regularly.

CST is pleased to announce that the National Counter Terrorism Security Office has accredited CST to deliver Project Griffin. The project aims to keep the public safe by ensuring that the Police work together with communities across the country. The focus of Operation Griffin is encouraging and enabling members of the wider community to “detect and deter terrorist activity and crime”. The accreditation comes during Counter Terrorism Awareness Week in the UK, which CST is supporting, which aims to educate the public about terror threats to Britain and encourages people to be vigilant.

Several years ago when CST first received Government funding for guarding at state funded Jewish schools, CST began to engage regularly with numerous commercial guarding companies. Since then, CST has held an annual briefing in advance of the High Holy Days.

CST hosted a successful open evening this week for members of the kehilla in Stamford Hill. The evening was aimed at those interested in joining or working with CST to help protect our Jewish community. CST invests in the kehilla to ensure the ongoing safety and future protection of all Jewish communities in the United Kingdom. CST has spent, in addition to government funding administered by CST, over £1.2 million for security measures within the kehilla.

In recent weeks, CST has hosted two briefing sessions for commercial security guards, in our Manchester and London offices. Over 250 guards attended, triple the number who have been present in previous years, representing a wide range of guarding companies that secure Jewish schools, synagogues and communal buildings.
