BBC amends online 'Constituency Profile' following complaints from Jewish community
28 April 2015
According to reports in the Manchester Evening News and Daily Express, the BBC has amended its online election profile of the Blackley and Broughton constituency in North Manchester after receiving several complaints that it was antisemitic in nature.
As explained in both articles, the original BBC profile stated that the demographics of the constituency included significant Irish, West Indian, Sikh and Polish populations. It also stated that 'there is a Jewish community concentrated in a wealthy pocket of large detached houses' in part of the constituency.
The articles state that the Jewish reference was later removed by the BBC following complaints by members of the Jewish community.
A spokesperson for the broadcaster said to the Express: “These profiles aim to portray every constituency in a few sentences.
"We regret part of our description of Blackley and Broughton did not accurately reflect the area and we have now changed the wording accordingly.”
