  • Ken Livingstone and “Hitler Zionism”

    Last week, CST and the Antisemitism Policy Trust released the report, Hidden Hate: What Google Search Tell us About Antisemitism in the UK, authored by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. This used Google search patterns in the UK since 2004 to reveal attitudes in this country towards Jews. Searches about Zionism in the UK, including those that searched for “Hitler Zionism”, were included in this work.

    Last week CST attended the EU High Level Group on Combating Racism, Xenophobia and Other Forms of Intolerance meeting in Brussels. CST has been working with the group for several months to tackle hate speech online, by engaging with numerous social media and internet companies including Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft.

    CST has long been concerned at the proliferation of antisemitism and other forms of hate online, and in particular how social media platforms can be used as a vehicle for antisemitic incidents and the distribution of antisemitic discourse and conspiracy theories. Last week, the Home Office and Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) launched their highly anticipated White Paper on Online Harms. 

  • CST works with the European Commission and social media companies to remove illegal hate speech online

    The European Commission has released the results of the third round of its social media illegal hate speech monitoring. CST has been involved in the project from its inception with the Code of Conduct in 2016. The results show that the average removal rate of illegal hate speech on Twitter, Facebook and Google, from across Europe, was 70%. The monitoring project shows a significant improvement for social media companies, with regards to removal rates and feedback to users.   

  • Man imprisoned for antisemitic abuse in Golders Green

    Jose Manuel Silva has been convicted of racially, religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm, distress and criminal damage and sentenced to 28 days in prison and handed a fine after shouting antisemitic abuse in Golders Green.

    CST’s new report, Antisemitic Discourse in Britain 2016, looks at the presence of antisemitic ideas or language, and discussion of antisemitism in general, in mainstream media, politics and public debate last year. Explicit prejudice or hostility towards or about Jews, simply for being Jewish, is rarely voiced in British public life; but antisemitism became a national political issue in 2016, while media discussion of the subject was more prominent than it had been for many years.   

  • Mr H Martinez convicted following racially aggravated altercation with Jewish property developers

    Last week Mr H Martinez was convicted for racially aggravated threatening behaviour following an altercation with Jewish property developers, Joe and Michael Gerrard. The developers were subjected to antisemitic abuse following a planning permission meeting in February 2016 after they were granted permission for a mixed development of a Co-op supermarket, office space and 25 luxury new build apartments.
