CST is inundated daily with reports about antisemitism online – whether it be on social media sites, traditional websites or blogs. CST works hard to ensure that social media companies, such as Twitter and Facebook, are educated and trained in what constitutes antisemitism and works with global partners to combat antisemitic hate website wherever they may be. However, the popular site, Urban Dictionary, appears to have taken away the ability to remove, or even try to begin the process of removing, antisemitism from the internet, highlighting the lack of cooperation CST often faces when it comes to tackling hate against Jews online.

Football supporter found guilty of antisemitic tweet

On 3 March 2018, a Twitter user, known as Lee Munns, was sentenced to community service and a fine after being found guilty of committing a Section 4a Public Order Offence after posting an antisemitic tweet in August 2017. Munns was previously implicated in a racism scandal involving Chelsea fans on the Paris metro. CST’s partner, Kick It Out, worked closely on the case to ensure it was dealt with by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Albion Beatnik: Holocaust Denial and antisemitism in your local indie bookshop

In Oxford, there’s an independent bookshop called Albion Beatnik. Albion Beatnik is happy to play host to people who they know are peddlers of Holocaust Denial, Jew hatred and other conspiracy theories. They have hosted such notorious figures as Gilad Atzmon and Nick Kollerstrom and sell David Irving’s books in their history section. When informed on Twitter that Gilad Atzmon was a well-known antisemite they doubled down on their support for him. As a point of fact, Atzmon promoted his latest book Being in Time (described by CST as “a profoundly antisemitic work”) there last June and several other times in 2017. Albion Beatnik also blogged about Atzmon’s book The Wandering Who in 2015. This is the book that was labelled by CST as being “quite probably the most antisemitic book published in this country in recent years.”
Reactions to Engine of Hate report

The angry reactions to CST’s recent report, Engine of Hate: The online networks behind the Labour Party’s antisemitism crisis, show exactly why such research is necessary. The reactions denied what the report said, whilst demonstrating the behaviours that caused it to be written in the first place. Some might call that ironic. Attacks have misrepresented what the report actually says. Similarly, CST has also been attacked and misrepresented. CST expected these reactions. Nevertheless, the misrepresentations are worth noting and exposing. Unfortunately, doing so requires some length, so as the points can be explicitly demonstrated.
